Hi! I'm Maya and I'm the lead at the Visayas Project which is still very much in its infancy. Other current unofficial members include my family and friends.
Having been born and grown up in the U.S., whenever I would visit the Philppines I was acutely aware of how fortunate I was compared to my neighborhood playmates and a lot of the general populace. I had more food, better clothes, newer toys, and a structurally sound home. I'd come for a few weeks or months, have my fun vacation, and leave back to the "land of opportunity", aware I could've easily been the one left behind if I had been born in another corner of the world.
I've tried to take advantage of all the opportunities I could and now am finally at a place wehre I can give back to my community. I've chosen to focus my starting efforts on where I consider home -- The Visayas where my mother is from. I do wish to expand to other parts of the Philippines in time.
The Visayas Project identifies those in the Philippines who are in need, finds any form of relief we can, no matter how fleeting or temporary. In the near future we'll probably just host feedings but as our allies grow, we may give clothing, household items, shelter, educational opportunities, and whatever else we can imagine.
To help those in need in the Philippines whether in the form of goods or services, no matter how small, no matter how fleeting the moment of respite or joy, so that one day those whom we help will help others as well.
